12 Drone Photography Tips for Beginners | HiFlyer

The first footage from a new drone often looks different from the smooth aerial videos you imagined. The horizon may be crooked, turns can feel sudden and the most interesting part of the landscape somehow ends up near the edge of the frame.

That is normal.

Strong drone photography is less about complicated camera knowledge and more about planning, light, composition and gentle control. Once you learn a few repeatable habits, even a short beginner flight can produce footage worth keeping.

Here are 12 practical ways to improve your drone photos and videos.

1. Clean the Camera Lens Before Every Flight

Start with the simplest fix.

A fingerprint, dust or dried sea spray can soften an entire recording. Bright sunlight can make a small mark appear as haze, flare or a blurry patch that cannot be fully repaired during editing.

Inspect the lens before powering on the drone. Use a clean microfibre cloth and wipe gently. Avoid using your shirt or fingers because they can leave fibres, oils or fine scratches.

If you are flying near the coast, check the lens again between batteries. Salt spray can travel farther than expected.

2. Choose the Light Before Choosing the Shot

The middle of a clear day may seem ideal, but direct overhead sunlight often creates harsh shadows and flat-looking landscapes.

Early morning and late afternoon usually provide softer light, longer shadows and warmer colour. Photographers commonly call the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset the golden hour.

Side lighting is especially useful from the air because it reveals the shape of hills, trees, buildings and waves. The same landscape can look almost flat at midday and highly detailed when low sunlight creates depth.

Always stay within the legal requirement to fly during daylight and land with enough light to see and orient the drone safely.

3. Plan One Main Subject

Aerial views contain a lot of information. Roads, trees, water, buildings and people can all compete for attention.

Before taking off, decide what the image is actually about. It might be:

  • a curved coastline;

  • a single tree in an open field;

  • a winding road;

  • a bridge;

  • patterns in farmland;

  • waves meeting the shore; or

  • a person standing safely in a clear area.

Once you choose the subject, build the rest of the frame around it. If everything is important, nothing feels important.

4. Turn On the Composition Grid

If your drone app or controller offers grid lines, turn them on.

A three-by-three grid makes it easier to use the rule of thirds. Instead of automatically placing the subject in the centre, position it near one of the grid intersections and use the remaining space to show direction, landscape or scale.

For a coastal scene, try placing the horizon near the upper or lower horizontal grid line rather than directly through the middle. A dramatic sky may deserve more of the frame, while clear water or an interesting shoreline may deserve less sky.

The rule of thirds is a useful starting point rather than a strict law. Adobe’s composition guide explains how the grid helps balance a subject with negative space. Once you can use it intentionally, you can also decide when a centred composition looks stronger.

5. Keep the Horizon Straight

A tilted horizon makes even technically sharp footage feel unfinished.

Use the grid to compare the horizon with a horizontal guide. If the horizon remains tilted while the drone is hovering in calm conditions, check whether the drone or gimbal needs calibration according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Wind and aggressive sideways movement can temporarily tilt the aircraft. Pause, allow it to stabilise and then record the shot.

It is possible to straighten footage later, but doing so requires cropping. Getting it right during the flight protects more of the original frame.

6. Fly Slower Than Feels Necessary

Fast flying can be exciting, but speed magnifies every small correction.

For smoother video, reduce the drone’s speed setting if the model supports it. Apply gentle pressure to the joystick rather than pushing it fully in one direction. Start moving before the important part of the scene enters the frame, then maintain one consistent motion.

Avoid changing direction repeatedly within the same clip. A slow forward pass will usually look better than a sequence that moves forward, sideways, upward and then rotates within a few seconds.

Think of the drone as a moving camera, not simply an aircraft.

7. Combine No More Than Two Movements

A single movement is easy to control and easy to watch:

  • fly forward;

  • rise vertically;

  • move sideways;

  • rotate slowly; or

  • tilt the camera gradually.

Once each movement feels smooth, combine two of them. For example:

  • fly forward while slowly raising the camera;

  • move sideways while keeping the camera aimed at the subject;

  • rise while gradually rotating; or

  • fly backward while revealing more of the landscape.

Trying to control height, direction, rotation and camera tilt at the same time often creates uneven beginner footage. Simplicity looks deliberate.

8. Practise Three Reliable Drone Shots

You do not need a long list of cinematic manoeuvres. Start with three shots you can repeat safely.

The reveal

Begin with the camera facing a nearby foreground element such as grass, a rock formation or the crest of a hill. Rise slowly or move forward until the wider landscape appears.

The pull-away

Start closer to the subject, then fly slowly backward and upward. The subject becomes smaller as the surrounding landscape is revealed.

Make sure the flight path behind the drone is completely clear. Do not rely only on the camera view.

The sideways pass

Keep the camera aimed toward the landscape while moving sideways at a steady speed. Foreground and background elements move at different rates, creating a sense of depth known as parallax.

Practise these shots at a low, comfortable height in a clear area before using them near more complex scenery.

9. Lock Exposure When the Lighting Is Stable

Automatic exposure adjusts brightness as the camera view changes. This can be helpful, but it may also create visible brightness shifts during a continuous video.

If your drone app provides exposure lock, frame the important part of the scene, allow the camera to set the brightness and then lock it before recording. This helps the clip maintain a consistent appearance.

Watch the brightest part of the image, especially the sky. A slightly dark foreground can often be improved later, while a completely white sky may contain very little recoverable detail.

If your drone offers manual exposure controls, learn them gradually. Do not spend so much time changing settings that you lose awareness of the aircraft.

10. Use the Highest Useful Quality, Not Just the Biggest Number

Select a resolution and frame rate that suit how you plan to use the footage.

Higher resolution can preserve more detail and allow some cropping, but it also creates larger files and may not be available with every stabilisation or frame-rate option. A lower-resolution clip with smooth movement and good light will usually look better than a shaky high-resolution clip.

For video, normal frame rates often suit landscapes and general flying. Higher frame rates are useful when you want smoother slow motion, provided the drone supports them and there is enough light.

Check the actual specifications of your selected drone and controller package rather than assuming every variant has the same camera features.

11. Record Longer Than the Final Clip

Do not stop recording immediately after completing a movement.

Begin recording, wait for two or three seconds, perform the shot and then continue for another two or three seconds. These quiet sections give you room to trim the clip cleanly during editing.

Aim to collect several short, controlled clips rather than one long flight recording filled with turns and repositioning. A simple sequence might include:

  1. one wide establishing shot;

  2. one forward movement;

  3. one sideways pass;

  4. one top-down or high-angle detail; and

  5. one pull-away closing shot.

This gives you enough variety to create a short video without flying unpredictably.

12. Edit Lightly and Keep Colours Natural

Editing should strengthen the footage rather than rescue every mistake.

Begin by removing takeoffs, landings, sudden corrections and moments when the camera is being repositioned. Choose only the smoothest part of each clip.

Then make small adjustments to:

  • exposure;

  • highlights and shadows;

  • contrast;

  • white balance;

  • colour saturation; and

  • horizon alignment.

Avoid pushing saturation until grass becomes fluorescent or water looks artificial. Consistent natural colour across several clips feels more professional than a heavy effect on each individual shot.

Use stabilisation carefully. Strong software stabilisation can crop the frame or distort the edges, so smoother piloting remains the better solution.

Safety Still Comes Before the Shot

Looking at the controller helps with framing, but Australian recreational pilots must keep the drone within visual line of sight. CASA explains that you must be able to see and orient the drone with your own eyes rather than flying solely through a screen or goggles.

You must also remain at least 30 metres away from other people, never fly over anyone, stay below 120 metres and avoid populous areas and emergency operations.

No photo is worth losing awareness of the aircraft or the area around it.

A Simple Practice Session

Use one battery to practise without the pressure of creating a complete video.

  • First two minutes: Hover and check the horizon.

  • Next three minutes: Record slow forward and sideways passes.

  • Next three minutes: Practise one reveal and one pull-away.

  • Next two minutes: Try three different compositions of the same subject.

  • Final minutes: Return and land with battery power in reserve.

Review the footage at home and identify the exact moment each clip becomes unstable. On your next flight, practise correcting that one issue.

Common Drone Photography Mistakes

Beginners often improve quickly by avoiding a few habits:

  • flying too high and making every subject look small;

  • recording in harsh midday light;

  • leaving the horizon tilted;

  • moving multiple controls aggressively;

  • rotating too quickly;

  • trusting obstacle sensors instead of checking the flight path;

  • watching only the screen;

  • forgetting to clean the lens; and

  • waiting until the battery is low before returning.

The best footage often comes from lower, slower and simpler flights.

What Features Help a Beginner Capture Better Footage?

When choosing a first camera drone, useful features include:

  • altitude hold for steadier height;

  • optical positioning for low-level stability;

  • a live FPV camera view;

  • a screen controller or reliable phone connection;

  • adjustable speed modes;

  • clear battery information;

  • stable camera mounting; and

  • spare batteries for repeated practice.

The most advanced specification is not always the most valuable. A drone you can control confidently will produce better footage than a more complex model you are afraid to practise with.
